Description of the quilling technique for beginners in diagrams and photographs. Quilling for beginners step by step instructions

Another article by Tatyana Yablonskaya (author of the story about the technique ““) - “ Quilling for Beginners". On our website there are various works in this technique, but it is much more convenient for those who are just starting to master it to collect in one article all the initial shapes of figures, useful tips and subtleties with photographs.

And perhaps in the future you will be able to create masterpieces like this:

But, of course, it’s better to start with the basics. Our step-by-step description of manufacturing the main elements will help you with this.

« Twig"It turns out if the spirals are twisted on one side.

« Curl" - an element when the two ends of the strip are twisted in an S-shape.

This is not a complete list of open elements.

When you learn how to make all these modules, then any craft will be within your power.

Examples of work using the quilling technique for beginners

Now move on to making simple images. In the first stages, you can use ready-made graphic diagrams; all the necessary elements are outlined there for beginners. Or you can turn on your imagination and start experimenting!

For example, butterfly. It consists of three main elements: the head is a tight roll, the body is an eye, and the wings are a drop. All modules are glued together with glue and a mini-craft is obtained.

All kinds of flowers. The elements “free spiral” and “eye” are needed. They combine to form chamomile (chrysanthemum).

This is what a gorgeous bouquet looks like!

If we take the elements “free spiral” and “drop”, then the flowers look a little different.

Composition for May 9 -

Especially in the modern world, what has become valuable is what is made with soul, with imagination, the production of which is approached not formally, but selectively and creatively. Individual, one-piece work, in which the author’s intention and his mood are readable - only this stands out from the stream, pleases the eye and gives positive emotions.

Today, together with the master Oksana Maslova, we will try to convey our mood through the art of paper rolling, paper plastic - quilling. Our master class "Name letter" is dedicated to mastering basic quilling techniques and is designed for those who are just beginning to explore the elegant world of “paper filigree.”

What is quilling?

Quilling is the art of paper rolling. The word quilling is derived from the English word "quill" - a bird's feather. In ancient times (XIV-XV centuries), nuns twisted strips of gilded paper into spirals, placing them on the sharp tip of a bird feather. In this way, lace compositions were created, a kind of mosaic for decorating icons. Over time, the art of quilling went beyond the walls of monasteries and acquired a secular character. Ladies from high society decorated boxes, family coats of arms, framed mirrors and many other objects with airy paper curls, imitating filigree, forging, and products made from metal plates. Now quilling has become a widely popular hobby and accessible to everyone, thanks to the simplicity of the technique, low costs and its beauty. This bright world of plastic and paper will interest not only adults, but also children, giving them a wonderful opportunity for creativity and self-expression.

Master class "Name letter"

So, today our work using the quilling technique is called “Name Letter”. We will lay out the letter using the contour quilling technique, combining it with basic elements - rolls. Thus, our goal is to get acquainted with the basics of quilling, master the skills thanks to which we will be able to embody our creative ideas brightly and elegantly.

The main tools that we will use during our lesson:

  • Quilling fork (a tool for curling paper strips). This tool is the main one in the quilling technique. With its help, strips of paper are easily twisted into various elements, which are subsequently used to decorate our works.
  • Plastic ruler-template for quilling on a cork base. Indispensable for creating identical, even elements, for collecting rolls with an offset center, as well as for husking (loop quilling). This is a separate branch in quilling. Pins are placed on the base and strips of paper are wrapped around them, forming loops. The element turns out to be more filigree, weightless and delicate. Loop quilling is usually used to make airy shapes, for example, the wings of butterflies, birds, and angels.
  • Cork mat. Convenient for assembling individual parts into a final element.
  • Tweezers with straight or angled nose. It will be convenient for collecting small details into an overall composition.
  • Scissors.
  • Pins with a head (safety) for securing elements and creating looped shapes. They also help create an off-center (eccentric) design.
We will prepare the following materials:
  • Quilling papers are multi-colored strips, often packaged in sets, sold in specialty stores for crafting, handicrafts, scrapbooking, or quilling. As an alternative to store-bought strips, use double-sided colored paper, cut into strips 3, 5 or 7 mm wide.
  • Paper glue (preferably PVA or a glue pen). The most important thing about glue is that it must be thick. As you work, you need to stir it so that it remains homogeneous and applied evenly. In our work on a personal letter, it is very convenient to use a glue pen, thanks to the sharp tip of which the glue lays out in a neat, thin line.
  • Colored or regular cardboard for the base, which is very important in contour quilling. You can always play with its color and texture, which will add its own flavor to our work. You can choose an already tinted base or tint the desired areas according to the design of the composition. It is better to take cardboard with a slightly rough surface, not too smooth, which will ensure quick and strong adhesion and adhesion between surfaces.
  • Carbon paper (for transferring the letter onto the base).
Having prepared everything necessary for creativity, we choose the letter that we would like to make. This can be the capital letter of your first or last name, or any other. For the outline of the letter, select thick paper (120-160 g/m2) 0.5 mm wide. Patterns inscribed in the outline of the letter can be made from narrower (0.3 mm) and less dense stripes.

After we have decided on the letter (size, font), the color of the base and outline, we get to work.

Contour quilling - step-by-step instructions

  1. We draw the outline of the letter onto the cardboard base as accurately as possible through carbon paper. This must be done without any blots so that the work turns out neat and beautiful.
  2. Using a toothpick or a needle, apply glue to the end (edge) of the strip and connect the coated edge with the outline of the letter drawn on the base. Here you need to fix the strip for a short time to give the glue a chance to set and dry a little. In this way we gradually lay out the outline of our letter. You can make this painstaking process easier by using a glue pen. The glue pen allows you to apply glue in a thin line straight to the base, and only then fix a strip of paper on it.
  3. When laying out the letter, we pay attention to the fact that all connections and joints between stripes pass along its lower side.
  4. In order to carefully lay out and glue all the corners and bends of the letter, we will use a cork quilling mat and pins with a head. We place a mat under the base, pin the letters at the corners, stretch a strip over them and glue it.
  5. After the outline of our letter is glued and dried, we remove all the pins, remove the base from the cork backing and fill the outline of the letter with beautiful elements, harmoniously selected by color.
There are several basic elements in the quilling technique, each of which has its own name. Based on the “roll” element, the following are formed: drop, eye, rhombus, square, triangle, tulip (lily of the valley or bell), arrow, crescent, semicircle... Other important elements in quilling are “scrolls”. These include: “S-scroll”, “V-scroll”, “heart”, “curl” and “twig”.

In order for our composition to turn out neat and beautiful, we will take into account several nuances:

  • We tear off the strip of paper rather than cut it. This makes its edge thinner and the middle of the roll becomes invisible.
  • Please ensure that no factory glue remains at the end of the strip, which is used to connect all the strips in the set to each other.
  • We remember that tools differ in size and texture of the handle, width and length of the slot. We select a quilling fork to suit your hand so that it fits comfortably in your hand. This will help with your work.
  • The cut in the tool must correspond to the width of the strip and the thickness of the paper. As a rule, these data are indicated on the quilling paper set. So, if the paper has a density of 160 g/m2, then we take a plug with a wider connector. For paper with a density of 80 g/m2 you will need a fork with a narrow slot. The height of the fork connector should also correspond to the width of the paper strip. For a strip 3-5 mm wide, take a fork 5 mm high; for a strip 5-10 mm wide, a tool with a slot height of 1 cm is suitable.

To better understand the basic elements of quilling, let's look at the manufacture of some of them in more detail.

Making basic quilling elements

How to make a tight roll

We insert the edge of the strip into the slot of the tool and twist the roll tightly, holding and controlling its evenness. We also remove the roll carefully so that it does not stretch into a cone. You can use two or more colors of paper. When one strip ends, glue another one so that the joint is no more than 2-4 mm and continue twisting. A tight roll, unlike a loose one, is not relaxed, but immediately glued using a brush, toothpick or needle to apply glue. You can also use a special tool to make tight rolls. It's called a "tight roll tool."

Using the base of the tight one, we make a “loose roll”

To create a roll of a certain diameter, it is convenient to use a template ruler. We insert the twisted tight roll into the template, where it unwinds to the required size, after which we fix the tip with glue. You can also glue the roll before giving it a certain shape. The master chooses it himself.

"Eye" element

We twist the roll tightly, unravel it to the required size and press it down, squeeze it with the index fingers and thumbs of both hands along the edges, on both sides and glue it.

"Rhombus"

We squeeze the loose roll, as when making an “eye”, tightly close the index and thumb of one hand with the index and thumb of the other to form a diamond.

A very beautiful quilling element - “drop”

We unravel the twisted roll either in our hand, holding it with our fingers, or, if we need a certain size, in a template with circles. Then we squeeze the roll with our fingers on one side and get a droplet shape. We glue the “tail” of the strip and let it dry.

The following quilling elements are made using the same principle:

"Arrow"

We relax the roll, make a drop, glue it and press the bottom of the drop inward with our fingers, slightly sharpening the edges. This element can also be done using a pencil or pen.

"Triangle"

Press the slightly relaxed roll with two fingers of your right hand and press the third side with your left finger. Thus we get a triangle.

"Square"

Slightly compress the sides of the loose roll, as when making a diamond, but not too much, giving it a square shape.

"Tulip"

Several of these elements can already make up a finished composition. We press one side of the twisted and slightly loose roll inward with the back side (handle) of the quilling tool. We slightly sharpen the edges with our fingers and get a tulip. We glue the edge, and the element is ready.

"Semicircle"

It is made like a tulip. Only we form the twisted roll not with the handle of the tool, but with our fingers, and, at the same time, we do not press one side inward, but leave it flat. It turns out to be a semicircle.

"Crescent"

It is made like a semicircle, but more curved.

These are the basic rolls. Following the logic of their manufacture, you can fantasize, and there are no limits. You can form a cone, spiral, paw, star, curved drop and many other elements, thanks to which you can decorate handmade cards, boxes, and gift packaging. Easter eggs made using the quilling technique look very beautiful.

"S-scroll"

The strip of paper is twisted into a tight roll halfway and on the other side also halfway, only in the opposite direction. This is how we get an element that looks like the letter "S". This scroll is not glued. It blooms a little and retains the desired shape.

"V-scroll"

Bend the strip exactly in half and tightly twist each side outward until it folds. The result is a scroll that looks like the letter “V” or the antennae of a butterfly.

Scroll "heart"

It is done in the same way as scroll V, only we twist the strips of paper tightly not outward, but inward, towards the inside of the corner. It turns out to be a heart. It can be placed in a template mold and allowed to bloom to the desired size.

Scroll "curl"

The strip curls almost completely into a tight roll and unravels naturally. The result is a curl on a flat or slightly curved stem, similar to a comma.

Scroll "twig"

We bend the strip in a ratio of 1:2. We twist the ends in one direction.

In addition to the basic elements, you can twist many arbitrary ones. For example, a wave with even or increasing “wings”. It twists from any fragment of the strip in any direction. You can leave it tightly curled, or you can loosen it a little. There are no strict limits or rules in quilling. There are basic elements thanks to which you can build something new and no less interesting. Based on rolls and scrolls, you can lay out various mosaics. And for greater variety, so that the work looks voluminous and colorful, you can use different colors of paper in the manufacture of one element, carefully gluing the strips one after another and twisting them. Thus, the effect of transition through halftones or bright rich contrast is created. Everything is like in nature. Natural and voluminous.

You can also make complex ones from simple basic elements: flowers, leaves, patterns... If we fold a flower and want its petals to be the same size, we use a template. We lay out a tight roll in the required size, let it unwind, form droplets-petals and glue it there in the template. If you need to make many different elements, then it will be more convenient to first roll the required number of rolls, glue them and set the shape. Then pin them to the cork mat, laying out the composition, glue them together and let them dry. The pins will prevent the assembled elements (parts) from moving. It's comfortable.

How to make a voluminous leaf without using loop quilling

You can make an airy, voluminous leaf without using loop quilling. The strip of paper is cut into fragments, approximately 10-15 cm each. The more of them there are, the more voluminous our leaf will turn out. We stack these fragments on top of each other, gluing everything to one point at one edge. Be sure to align the strips with each other so that they lie in a neat, even stack, and then move them along their length, fixing them with glue on the other edge. The result is an airy, voluminous leaf with veins.

Roses using quilling technique

Insert the edge of the strip into the slot of the tool. We make several turns, forming a tight roll (hold the roll with your index finger so that it does not unwind). We turn the strip outward by one bend and twist it around the fork again. We continue to make a “fold-turn” until our bud or open rose is formed. Remove the finished flower from the fork and drip a drop of glue into the middle from the bottom side so that the glue is not noticeable. You can lightly coat the lower petals with glue to secure them. Our rose is ready.

Quilling paper is very flexible. It springs well, holds its shape and is easy to manipulate. Over time, with some skill, all your elements will be formed quickly and easily. All that remains is to follow the basic principle of quilling: twisting-composing-gluing and have fun imagining! In fact, quilling is so simple and fun that once you start laying out specific or abstract patterns, you won't stop. This is a mood that you want to share with others. A sea of light and colors!

Quilling is a word that few people are familiar with. This means making figures from strips of paper twisted into spirals. Is it really that simple and easy to do? The variety of options will surprise you.

Next, I will tell you how to create beautiful things from ordinary paper. This type of activity will help you brighten up long winter evenings or make a beautiful thing with your own hands and give it to your loved one. Or maybe after my lessons, it will become a hobby for you and will even bring in a small income.

But to understand what it is, to find out who invented it, let's plunge into the history of quilling.

A little history

This art form was invented by monks in Europe during the Middle Ages. When they trimmed the edges of gilded books and twisted them around the ends of birds' feathers. Thus, it turned out something similar to a golden miniature.

This is where the name quilling comes from. From the English word “quill”, which translates as “bird feather”. At the very beginning, this was done in poor churches, especially in the 19th century, quilling was a favorite pastime of noble ladies.

In the twentieth century they forgot about him. And at the end of the last century, quilling began to return to people's homes as a hobby.

As a result of his wandering around the world, their own schools began to be formed in each country. And each nation brought something of its own to this type of art. For example, eastern schools differ from European ones in the complexity of their patterns, which allows eastern people to create masterpieces of art.

And the Korean school differs from the European one in that when winding the paper, a rod is not used, and everything is done by hand. The works of the Korean school are very complex. In our country this art became popular at the end of the twentieth century.

Therefore, few of us know this type of art thoroughly. I will introduce you to the basics of this art form, give advice, give examples and try to give you all my knowledge. Let's start with the basics.

But before you start doing this type of creativity, you need to prepare. That is, purchase the necessary tools for the job.

List of required tools

Below I have given a list of required tools if we want to create all kinds of beauty from paper.

You don't have to spend money on purchasing quilling kits. And make the necessary tools from household appliances.

For this purpose, ordinary women's manicure scissors with straight ends, an awl or a toothpick are suitable. Between the two ends of the scissors you need to put a long strip of paper, gently squeeze it so as not to cut it and twist it. With an awl and a toothpick, they do it a little differently: place the edge of the paper on the end of the awl and hold it with your finger, and with the other hand you twist the rest of the strip onto it.

Now, knowing and keeping close to us the tools that we will need, we can move on to learning the basics of quilling.

Quilling Basics for Beginners

The production of paper products begins with a drawing. In this type of art, a drawing is a diagram according to which in the future an unusual craft will be made, which can bring a bit of brightness and unforgettableness to your interior. First, let's look at how simple diagrams are drawn and which magical crafts come out of them using the example of making a snowflake.

We will need:

  • Pencil.
  • Colored paper.
  • Scissors.

Now take A4 paper and fold the sheet so that you get a right triangle. Cut off the unnecessary excess part and fold it three times. Then we draw patterns on it and cut them out.

When we have mastered the initial and simple technique of making crafts, which we discussed above, we move on to more complex ones. Let's learn how to make rolls. It is the main element in the quilling technique.

We will need:

  • Colored paper.
  • Pencil.
  • PVA glue.
  • Scissors.

Rod for creating rolls

At the very beginning, you need to outline the future composition with a pencil on the blank for the greeting card or the place where this product will be located upon completion. The next thing we need is to make a roll. To do this, we need to take a thin and long strip of paper and wind it onto a specially prepared rod.

After this is done, we must let the roll unravel. The end of the roll must be carefully glued to the resulting spiral. Now you can give the roll any shape, be it a drop, a heart or a month.

Advice

To avoid getting smeared with glue, you need to apply it to the parts of the product quite a bit. This can be done using a toothpick.

Special paper for quilling is sold. It's better to use it.

And now we come to the main elements of quilling.

Essential elements

Now let's look at what parts quilling creations consist of. Any work starts with tight spiral. This is the first element in quilling when preparing a product.

Above, when we made the roll, we essentially used this element. But then we did not yet know its true name. Now we know this.

Let's repeat the process of creating a tight spiral once again. A rod is taken and a strip of narrow paper is wound onto it. And the tip of the latter is carefully glued to the spiral.

FYI

  • If you are right-handed, you should hold the strip with your left hand and the rod with your right.
  • If the strip is double-sided, then the back of it should face the direction of the rod.
  • The rod must be rotated clockwise.

The next element is the “free spiral”. It is manufactured in the same way as a “tight spiral”. But after we have finished winding it, we need to remove the spiral from the rod and let it unwind a little.

Now we have learned how to create various kinds of spirals. The same technology is used to create a “curl” figure. But at the end of the work, the tip of the paper tape does not stick and hangs freely in the air.

In order to make a drop, you need to squeeze one part of the “free spiral” shape with your fingers and hold for a few seconds. This is done so that the figure takes on the shape of a drop. You can also bend the tip of the “drop” shape, getting a slightly different “curved drop” element.

Advice

If you are just starting to learn quilling, never rush!

Well, we looked at simple quilling forms. Now it's time to move on to more complex ones. Such shapes are obtained from two or more folded together.

Complex shapes in quilling

The complex element “horns” is created from two “free spirals” twisted in different directions.

For this, take a long strip of paper and break it in half. The right part is screwed in one direction, the left - in the opposite direction. This element can be attached to a fun greeting card.

Underwater theme - will decorate a house near the sea

The next shape will be a “heart”.

It is done in exactly the same way as the “horns”. Only the directions in which the spirals are wound change. And the connection point is clamped with your fingers. This type of product is ideal for decorating a gift for your girlfriend or wife.

The next most difficult one would be the “crescent moon”.

It is made from a simple “eye” shape, only the opposite corners are bent upward. It turns out something similar to the letter “C”. For the shape that in psychology denotes a leader, namely for a triangle, a “free spiral” is taken. Then it is compressed into three parts with your fingers and held for a while.

The next element is obtained from the triangle shape.

To do this, you need to bend two opposite sides into the center. And we will get “paws”. To make a “square” shape, I take a “free spiral”. Then I squeeze it into four parts to make a square.

So we got acquainted with the main forms of quilling products. And now we know what tools we need for this type of creativity. And we have some basis that will allow us to move on to creating more complex products.

Quilling flowers

Such flowers will serve as a kind of transition from simple to complex for a beginning quilling master. In fact, this is not yet the most complex product, but it contains many simple elements that complicate the manufacture of the product. Thus, the novice creator receives invaluable experience and beauty in his home, made with his own hands.

To create such flowers you need to make a “drop” from a “free spiral”. And so that the flower petals have different colors, you will need colored paper.

As you can see, the core of the flower is created from a “free spiral”. Next, the core of the flower is the first to be glued to the card or the surface that you plan to decorate. Around this figure I glue the “drops” that I have already made in advance.

At the very beginning, you need to draw a template according to which they will be made. It is necessary to divide the strips of paper in half. There should be three of them. Then I twist the first spiral. Then I insert it into the hole of the stencil. It is necessary to make the remaining spirals the same size. So I find out that the hole is one centimeter, which means the other four spirals will be the same size.

In order not to damage the workpiece, I carefully pull it out with a toothpick, and then let it unwind a little. And only after that I glue the tip to the spiral. Then I place these blanks in the center of the pre-drawn layout.

For beginners, it is advisable to use pins to attach the spirals to the layout. And then they can be glued together.

Now we have learned how to make complex snowflakes. The next stage will be the production of decorative jewelry in the form of lovely ladies' earrings. They are ideal for a birthday gift for your girlfriend.

Making women's earrings

To create this kind of jewelry, which is very beloved by our women, we will need:

  • Colored paper. I will have blue and white colors.
  • Scissors.
  • Quilling rod.
  • Quilling board.
  • PVA glue.
  • Pencil.

At the very beginning, in order for such jewelry to turn out symmetrical, I will have to imagine what the earrings will look like and draw a diagram on paper. This diagram will serve as a template for gluing the various parts together.

Step-by-step instruction

  • I cut six strips of blue paper, one centimeter wide, and glue them together.
  • I made three strips of white paper and glued them to the end of the resulting ribbon of blue stripes. And I add three strips of blue paper glued together. I do this twice to make two long strips.
  • Then, I use a rod to turn them into a tight spiral shape. We discussed the creation of this form at the very beginning.
  • I make the same strips again, only I cut the strips by two. That is, instead of six strips, I cut out four from blue paper, I also leave three from white paper and glue them together, adding two strips and blue paper at the end.
  • I also use the rod to turn this ribbon into a "tight spiral". Only now it turned out to be smaller than the first one. And I create another similar spiral.

Don't rush, this technique doesn't like to be rushed.

Step-by-step instruction

  • And the third time I do the same with the paper as the first two times, only I reduce the number of strips of the first blue ribbons to two.
  • Again, I turn the created ribbon into a “tight spiral”. Just like the first time, I will need two such spirals. You probably already guessed why I needed paired quilling forms. Of course, there should be two ladies’ earrings! Now I lay out the prepared forms on the previously created template and glue them together.
  • Lastly, I cut out a few more strips of blue paper, glue them together and roll them with a dowel. But now I turn the shape not into a “tight spiral”, but into a “loose spiral” and pinch it along the edges with my fingers and slightly stretch it to form an “eye” shape.
  • I make four of these types of figures. Two for each earring and glued according to the template.
  • The final step is to thread the clasp ring through the eye-shaped holes. The picture below shows how excellent my beauty turned out.

So we learned how to create complex and beautiful ladies' jewelry. Let's now try to make an unusual quilling flower.

Making an unusual flower

Now we come to more serious things. I will tell you and show you how to make a volumetric quilling flower. To do this, you need to purchase or get tools already prepared in advance, namely:

Step-by-step instruction

  • I take a sheet of white paper and divide it into strips three centimeters wide. Then I cut them and glue the strips one by one along the length. The result is one long ribbon.
  • Now we need to paint it. Using a pipette, apply paint to the sponge. Apply yellow ink to one half of the sponge and red paint to the other half.
  • Then, using a sponge, we paint our prepared long ribbon of white paper. And after the paint has dried on the paper tape, use curly scissors to cut out the pattern. What should happen can be seen in the picture.
  • Now let's move on to creating the petals for our flower. They need to be cut so that both the petals and the corners sticking out between them. In this case, you need to leave four millimeters at the edge uncut so that the tape does not tear. As shown in the picture below.
  • Then I make the core for the flower. To do this, I twist a strip of quilling paper into a tight spiral. The diameter of the roll should match the diameter of the pencil.

If the diameter is smaller, then you can easily add another tape.

Apply glue only to the uncut edge!

Step-by-step instruction

  • The next step in creating a flower is to apply glue to the painted tape on the paint application side.
  • Then I glue the flower petals to the core, as shown in the picture.
  • After the flower is twisted, you need to glue its bottom with PVA glue to make sure that it will not come apart in the future.
  • Now I remove the flower from the stem and straighten its edges with my fingers. In the end, it turned out to be such a miracle.
  • Of course, at your discretion - you can straighten the edges or not. I straightened them out in order to insert the “pistle” there, thereby making the flower more like a real one.
  • I cut off part of the sharpened pencil, coat the cut part with glue and insert it into the center of the flower. This is what we can do!

Any of these products can decorate cards for the first school day of the year and delight a child with its beauty and unusualness.

Previously, we looked at quilling techniques for adults. But you can also involve children in this needlework. Thus, they will develop breadth and originality of thinking.

Quilling for children

According to psychologists and children's pediatricians, modern children now have poorly developed motor skills of their hands and fingers.

Therefore, it is difficult for them to learn standard skills and simple self-service in life. Quilling for children promotes the development of this type of motor skills. At the same time, it raises the level of logical thinking.

The development of fine motor skills helps to increase attention and memory in a child. He will absolutely need all this in his future life, and the quilling technique can help a lot with this.

It also helps to cultivate perseverance, accuracy, and aesthetic taste in a child. Of course, you need to start with simple things.

Master class for children - ladybug

To create a ladybug we will need the following materials:

  • Sheet of cardboard.
  • Colored paper.
  • Screw rod.
  • PVA glue.
  • Scissors.

Step-by-step instruction

  • At the very beginning, I cut out the body of a ladybug from cardboard - a semicircular oval. Then, from a sheet of red colored paper, I make an oval in the shape of the body and cut off the lower part as shown in the figure.
  • Now I prepare the bottom part from a light yellow sheet and glue it onto the cardboard. Then I take and cut out a long black strip and glue it down the center of the cardboard.
  • When the body oval for the “ladybug” is ready, you can begin “paper rolling”. Black dots on the ladybug’s body will consist of “loose spirals”. Then I glue these created shapes to the cardboard.

Useful tips

If you want to relax and do something interesting, exciting and useful, then it might be worth paying attention to quilling (paper rolling).

Using this technique, you can make a lot of interesting things, decorate cards and/or gifts.

It is also worth noting that this activity requires accuracy and perseverance from you. Despite this even the very first time you will do a beautiful job, and you won’t have to throw away something that you think didn’t work out. Just follow the master class, make a small flower or several paper flowers, and then attach them to a card or gift.

If you decide to get serious about quilling, gain practice and develop spatial thinking.

For quilling you will need:

Colored paper is not very thin, which needs to be cut into strips with a width of 1.5mm to 9mm (there is even special paper for quilling).

* To cut colored paper into strips you will need a steel ruler and a utility knife.

A rod for rolling paper. If you do not have a special rod, you can replace it with a wooden stick, a thick needle, a thin awl or a toothpick.

A stencil that has several round holes of different diameters

Tweezers (preferably have sharp and smooth ends) to hold the twisted strip while glue is applied to it

Straight nail scissors, for cutting fringes and small parts

PVA glue or other quick-drying glue

Compass

Ruler

Pencil

More experienced quilling masters also use machines for cutting small fringes, special cork boards to pin elements to them during assembly, and a hot glue gun to make three-dimensional structures.

Crafts using the quilling technique. Where to start.

To master this technique, try starting with a simple card. To make one flower using the quilling technique, it will take you about an hour (20 minutes is enough for experienced quillers).

1. To begin, outline the future composition on the postcard blank with a simple pencil.

* The main element of quilling, from which you can then make various shapes, is called a roll. It is made when you roll a strip of paper into a tight roll.

2. To make a roll, you need to hook the strip with the forked end of a rod (this could be a toothpick, a thin awl, etc.) and screw it tightly onto this rod.

* After you have rolled the roll, let it unravel a little, gently holding it with your fingers. Glue the tip of the roll to the spiral.

3. You can start giving different shapes to your roll. You can flatten the edges with your fingers on one or more sides and get many different elements, including a droplet, a leaf, a crescent, a heart, etc.

4. When you have prepared the element, apply a little glue to it and glue it to your card.

These are the flowers you can make using quilling

If you want rolls that are the same size (for example, if you are making petals for one flower), you may want to purchase a template with different sized holes. The "officer" line, for example, will help you.

If you made rolls from thin paper, do not hold them in your hands for a long time, otherwise they will not unfold.

Use just a little glue to secure the spirals. You can apply it with the tip of a toothpick.

If you want to make a three-dimensional figure, twist a spiral from a very long strip, and then give the roll a three-dimensional shape—a dome or a cone, for example. Then use glue to attach the arms, legs and other elements to your form.

If you decide to purchase special paper for quilling, pay attention to its length - if it corresponds to the length of a regular A4 sheet, then the paper strips could be made from regular paper, but they are sold as special paper. Quilling paper.

When working with quilling technique, never rush.

Quilling. Schemes for beginners. Basic forms.

A regular spiral can be modified and combined with other elements so that you can get different shapes and structures.

Here are some shapes that can be made by manipulating a strip of colored paper:

Quilling - master class for beginners

Quilling, a fashionable hobby, as a result of which you can make a variety of paper miniatures. Most often, crafts are made from colored paper, but it is quite possible to make miniatures from white paper.

In order to master the art of quilling, you just need to master the production of individual elements of miniatures, and then prepare various crafts, postcards, paintings from them...

You can buy special paper for quilling in craft stores or make the blanks yourself. The most important thing is the thickness of the paper. It should be at least 60 grams per square meter (usually this information is indicated on the packaging) otherwise it will not curl neatly and keep its shape.

Now comes the fun part. How do you still get such wonderful work? It turns out everything is quite simple. The principle of creating masterpieces from paper: you need to wrap a strip of paper around the awl rod (you can use a simple toothpick), secure the end of the strip with glue, and then create a petal, drop, or some other shape. There are quilling patterns that can be used to create one or another pattern of stripes.

Quilling technique

Take a strip of paper with two fingers.

Pull the end of the strip with pressure with two fingers of your other hand, running your nail along it so that the end bends slightly.

The curved tip is easier to wrap around the awl. Wind several turns tightly. The curved tip is easier to wrap around the awl. Twist a few turns tightly.

When the diameter of the roller becomes 3-4 mm, it can already be removed from the awl and further turned by hand

Roll the thick disk with both hands, always catching it with your fingers so that the paper tape does not unravel.

The entire strip is folded

Now relax your fingers slightly, allowing the paper spiral to unravel a little.

Glue the end of the strip with PVA glue

Now squeeze the workpiece with two fingers. The result is a “drop” blank.

Workpieces can be given a variety of shapes by performing compressions and indentations.

These are “drop” and “petal” blanks.

In addition to these two figures, there are also a number of basic forms of twisting paper tapes:

Tight spiral. Twist the ribbon and glue the tip without removing the spiral from the needle so that the ribbon does not unwind.
Free spiral. Twist the ribbon, remove the spiral from the needle and let it unwind before gluing the end.

Curved drop. Make a drop and bend its corner.
Eye. Make a loose spiral and squeeze the opposite sides, giving it the appropriate shape

Semicircle. Make a free spiral, squeeze two corners so that one side of the workpiece is flat and the other is rounded.
Bird's foot. Make a loose spiral, compress the triangle, bend two corners towards the third and press firmly.

Sheet. Make a loose spiral, compress it into the shape of an eye and fold the corners.
Triangle. Make a loose spiral and squeeze it in three places.

Arrow. Make a loose spiral, compress it to form a triangle, and press its two corners together.
Cone. Twist a tight spiral into a cone, glue the end of the tape, dry the workpiece and only then remove it from the needle.

Crescent. Make a free spiral, squeeze the corners and bend the part.
Rhombus. Make an eye and pinch the corners together to create a diamond shape.

Master class 1. Quilling flower.

To work you will need double-sided colored paper, PVA glue, cardboard - as a background for creating a postcard and a couple of toothpicks.

The simplest quilling element is a spiral, to make it, you need to wind a strip of colored paper about 5-0.7 cm wide and up to 25 cm long, then remove it from a toothpick, unravel it a little and glue the edge of the paper with glue. The spiral is ready, it is the basis for the manufacture of other elements.

Spiral with clamp It is made from an ordinary spiral by squeezing it with your fingers on one side. A spiral with a clip can be used as a petal or leaf for a future flower.

If you squeeze the spiral on both sides, you get a boat, which can also be used as a leaf. And if you clamp the spiral on one side and bend it inward on the other, you’ll get heart.

When all the elements are ready, you need to form a pre-thought-out composition from them and glue them to a cardboard base with PVA glue. You can also use velvet paper as a base; this craft looks more impressive.

Here is a simple quilling master class, I hope it will help you master the basics of quilling.
